Driver A - Buju Banton

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Big shouts to all of Brooklyn. The old hood is featured in this video…from Glenwood to Albemarle Road, Crown Heights and all the surrounding land. Buju Banton will never be replaced as the conscious thug of reggae. Wheel dat tune star.

Something Like A Pimp

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Pimp C drenched the hip-hop world with a dose of bare-faced commentary on everything from the questionable luster of Ne-Yo’s lips to the shift from thug style to debonair and dainty. Not too long ago, Byron Crawford of XXL blasted Pimp C for being a crazed sherm-head with a predilection for outbursts. A feud with Bun B ensued, as Bun took up for his jailed compadre in a show of UGK solidarity. Although writers and other rappers often bristle when someone on the inside claims to know better about the State of the Union, a pimp’s straight talk is exactly what we need during election season. Unfortunately, Pimp C’s life was cut short. The pimping aspect of hip-hop and black culture, however, remains.
Rock, of Heltah Skeltah fame, was accused of attempted murder in relation to his dealings with a prostitute and her “agent.” As it turns out, Rock too is a pimp (or at least dabbles in the tawdry industry). As he prepares to release his mixtape “Shell Shock” Rock answers questions about the events in question.

Why not follow in Jay’s footsteps? He’s only done that his whole life.

Jay Dilla, Donuts Are Forever Party

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

6th Sense created this video tribute, which commemorates late producer Jay Dee at a party in his honor at Brooklyn’s famed underground music venue, Southpaw. James Yancey gave us another kind of hit, the one with everlasting flavor, soupy soul, shivering bass and slick rhymes. While his accomplishments as a producer will never be forgotten, he remains a music lover’s artist, confined to the stickiness of his timeless recordings. Tribute videos don’t get better than this one.

Peace to 6th the Renaissance Man.

Milk and Cereal

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Despite my gourmand ways, and some of my creative extracurricular activities, a brother ain’t never been too big on cereal. While friends and fam have sung its praises, I always chose Ramen noodles as my cheap n’ easy dish. Then someone sent me these music videos, internet tributes to the joys of cereal. I wanted to toast with a big bowl of cereal to whoever made this. It’s sweeping college campuses…and the world.

That’s the “black version” apparently…while VT’s finest (Virginia Tech) created the original video:

This song has soul. I could rock to this shit all day really. Snap, crackle, pop. The songwriter “G-Love” has a website where you can check out other selections like “Booty Call” for your listening pleasure.

Snoop Performs “Sensual Seduction” live on Ellen

Everyone said Kanye had the soccer mom appeal on his last album, but it looks like snoop is about to give him a run for that title.

Ghostface, Styles and Beanie Scare People for Big Doe Rehab

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

This is the commercial for Ghost-dini’s latest album. And this is the song that makes radio DJ’s afraid to put Ghost records in rotation. A lot of people get theoretically bodied, shot and manhandled. What more could we expect from the Heavyweight Division of Beans, Styles and Ghost? The song is called “Barrell Brothers,” which inevitably evokes gun images but also signifies the husky rap that these three lay down. It could just as easily be called “Barrell-Chested Brothers” from all the baritone booming through here.

Appreciate.

Killer Mike Talks Safe Sex

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Cable access star Alexis Tylor a.k.a. “Vagina Power” sat with Killer Mike to discuss the finer points of oral etiquette. Graphic, funny language ahead.

Dave Chappelle in London

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Favorite quotes from the routine: “EVERYBODY in here is from Africa.” “What would a country be without Jamaicans?…Sober.” “Don’t you taser me, MAAAAAn.” “I was almost rich bitch…I’m broke.”

Props to WMDeez.com.

Video: Joell Ortiz’s 125 Grams Pt. 4

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

It gets no better. Rik Cordero is killing the grainy-blue-reminiscent video style right now. His style is distinct and necessary to the visual seekers of a hip-hop aesthetic.
